Shorty Howell Park

Welcome to Shorty Howell Park - the crown jewel of Gwinnett County Parks and the proud home of the Duluth Baseball and Softball Association. Go Wildcats!!

Shorty Howell Park is one of the first parks purchased by Gwinnett County.  It opened in 1978 and was named after Jones Tillie “Mr. Shorty” Howell, a long-time park volunteer.  With the help of funds from the 1997 Sales Tax, twenty-five acres were added to park in 1997. The 2001 Sales Tax provided the funds for the renovation and expansion of this park’s now 67 acres.  When Shorty Howell Park reopened in the spring of 2005, the many improvements/renovations included a new football field with a lighted walking track and concession building; the newly renovated seven baseball/softball fields and concession building; two new playgrounds; a 1.25-mile paved multi-purpose trail with a walk-over bridge; a 1-mile mulch trail; additional parking; and a facelift for the park entrance on Pleasant Hill Road.  In addition, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation opened a new 8,200 square-foot activity building that is busy with recreation classes, club meetings and rental activity.
